Tarun Tahiliani: A Wonderful Drama

Tarun Tahiliani’s bridal collection, shown at India Couture Week, is a rich and evocative drama, adorned with a lustre of tradition and ancient crafts. It has been said that Tahiliani really knows how to put together a collection, it’s something that fashion devotees anticipate with immense glee, and as always he doesn’t disappoint.

His collections always emanate with a warm and sensuous glow. Forever original, this time around Tahiliani sought out inspiration from the ancient regional crafts of India, rendering it with his trademark razzle dazzle. For the couture range he created a wildly dramatic array of gowns, tempered by a delicate palette of colours, extraordinarily feminine in execution, he managed to balance so harmoniously the elements of frenzy with the demure.

Tahiliani’s previous collection was all regal splendour, cherry picking his inspirations from the beauty of Mughal India, this time it was about the crafts that India has been famous for for centuries. The wondrous textile industry that began in the small villages and towns.

The echoes of a thousand artisans are woven into this collection, from the material to the intricate embroidery, it pays a glorious homage to the stylistics and craftsmanship of the past. Each design incorporates something individual, something of heritage, from their Tahiliani injects a flurry of modernity and crowns it with his luxurious touch.

tarun8

In Tahiliani’s own words – “Glimpses of shimmering gold, hues of soft pastels and a whimsical frothiness are reminiscent of an era of charm and elegance. Creating couture which keeps distinctive Indian crafts alive, while exploring visions in sparkling crystal and carat, reflects emotions that give shape to sensuous, elegant and bespoke luxury for brides, grooms and their families as well as for other occasions. This collection will be living, breathing heritage, melded with the fresh vibrancy and essence of modern India.” As always, Tarun Tahiliani reminds us that the flower of creativity can only truly flourish when designers pay their respects to what has gone before.

Most recently, at Lakme Fashion Week, Tarun showcased his Summer Resort collection, which is a kaleidoscope of colours, a sheer explosion of fun and frivolity prevailed. The theme embodies a party, a mardi gras of festive patterns and cleverly matched colours.

Suneet Varma: Decorative Arts Of India

We know Suneet Varma as one of the emerging maestros’ of the Indian fashion fraternity. Suneet’s journey started from graduating at the London College of Fashion, leading on to his work with Yves Saint Laurent in Paris. His milestones grew throughout the years from hosting India’s first international fashion and style program, ‘Suneet Varma’s Style Guru’  for Star World TV, to being a franchisee partner in India for ‘Armani Junior’. Suneet Varma’s latest collection was showcased at the Spring Couture 2015 Show for Lakme Fashion Week at the Palladium Hotel, Mumbai. His collection titled ‘Decorative Arts of India’ speaks of romance, femininity and flirtatiousness. It draws inspiration from the traditional motifs and embroideries of Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan and the Southern states of India. Suneet says, “India has had centuries of old love affair with couture or made to measure for pleasure. There is no denying the luxurious indulgence of precious finery, the magical beauty of one‐ off embellished wedding attire and the sparkle of personalized jewels that are made to match with it.”

Suneet Varma

The collection has customary Indian attire with a contemporary twist. This time Suneet uses a lot of shades of red from sindoor to fuchsia pinks from rose to deep magenta that lie within Rajasthan. Stark white and ivory with color-on-color aari embroidery, dark navy and cobalt blue with antique, burnt gold and copper thread embellish these stunning lehengas. Some of the pieces imbue in mirror work embellishment within the large borders in the thread embroidery. These impeccable details and fabrics create a distinct regal look.

Suneet Varma

The silhouettes of long and slender layering in sheer fabrics from the two-piece sarees with embellished corset blouses, delicate antique zardosi, long anarkali kurtas with mirror work and thread embroidered all over jaal accolade the collection. The short tunics have colour-on-colour thread and Swarovski crystals with draped dhoti salwars, Angrakha style kalidar kurtas worn with short cropped jackets with draped collars and delicate bead embroidery. The fabrics used in those are in luscious silk chiffon, Georgette, silk jacquard and jewel-toned rich velvets; with yet again these characteristics pervading royalty and luxuriousness.

Suneet Varma

The collection also features sheer chiffon sarees decked with gold aari and thread embroidery in large floral motifs reminiscent of the beauty of the Punjab royalty. A mix of traditional Indian textiles in bright colors combined with the sensibility of the royal costumes of India. The collection uses white on white thread embroidery with a dash of colour on long and short tunics with Capri trousers and Patiala salwars with tasseled triangular stoles.

Suneet Varma

Overall, there is an array of sophistication executed in many forms within Suneet’s attire from the silhouettes of the collection which are slim, sheer and narrow with very delicate embroideries down to the use of lavishing fabrics. I admire how he has placed thought into every slight detail of each piece, may it be the use of nostalgic antique embroideries or using a variety of blue shades. His collection really does depict the ‘Decorative Arts Of India’. Now to see my personal top 3 favourite pieces from the collection (talk about a hard choice to make!).

Gaurav Gupta: 10th Anniversary Exhibition

gg10

A prince among men, Gaurav Gupta has been a force of pure unadulterated creativity for decades. His designs are a bewitching amalgamation of history, luxury, beauty and style, superseded by none. The end of 2014 marked 10 years since the launch of his brand and opening of his first store, it was a thoroughly illuminating celebration.

gg1

An iconic exhibition was staged at Delhi Art Gallery, which saw his most recent collection exhibited alongside a vast collection of beautiful portrait photography and art that inspired the collection.

gg7

As noted by One Soul Life – “The occasion was hosted at DAG on Thursday 27th November 2014. Many celebrities and known faces attended in Gaurav Gupta’s couture. Shruti Hassan, Anushka Manchanda, Kiran Rao, Manasi Scott, Suchitra Pillai and Bandana Tewari with models Ricky and Tara were seen. Also present were Arjun Kapoor, Obit Marwah, Zayed Khan amongst many others.”

gg6

The exhibition was an innovative exploration into the mind of a sartorial genius, featuring video projections of the design process, an exclusive display of Gaurav’s graduation collection, along with photos and iconic designs that charted his rise and creative enrichment over the years.

gg8

Much like his store, the exhibition was a heady mix of magic realism and unabashed fantasy, age old grandeur was mixed with the modern in perfect synchronicity.

gg3

Something else proved special about this exhibit, as the Times of India discovered during an interview with Gaurav – “He also unveils his first ever campaign with his muse Kalki. In his words, “Kalki is fantastical. She embodies mystery, womanhood and a childlike quality. She is a progressive artist in every way and that shows in the different expressions of her creativity — from theatre to philanthropy, cinema and fashion.”

gg9

As Gaurav Gupta reached a milestone, he has certainly not grown complacent, he still has that intense hunger to create and master the alchemy of beautiful design. Forever expanding and perfecting his craft.

gg4

To put it simply, Guarav Gupta we salute you! Xx

Rohit Bal’s Spectacular Ode to Heritage

rohit_bal1

Rohit Bal is a designer one would have to describe as quintessentially Indian, in both design as well as the execution of his shows. Although born in Kashmir, as a designer he is definitely a product of New Delhi, a place which has given birth to a succession of talent, each more intriguing than the last.

rohit1oct13

With a degree in History from St. Stephens College, it is the past which remains a source of inspiration for Bal, he’s developed a distinctive quality for reaching far back into the depths of history and creating modern beauty from it.

rohit2oct13

Made famous for his speciality of including Lotus and Peacock motifs into his designs, he is a designer who is steadfast in capturing the richness of Indian fashion, infusing art historical passion with contemporary design aesthetics.

rohit3oct13

Recently he proved his worth as a designer who can not only create gorgeous designs, but also put together a breathtaking show. At Will Fashion Week, Bal was one of the final designers to showcase his collection.

It’s not unusual to say, but the majority of shows which take place during the end of most fashion weeks are never anything exciting, but Rohit Bal well and truly broke with tradition.

rohit12oct13

The venue was Quli Khan’s Tomb at the Mehrauli Archaeological site in Delhi. For a designer known for a love of history, it was indeed the perfect setting. To begin, the soundtrack to the show was perfect, with live music performed by Shubha Mudgal.

secondrohitoct13

The tone and theme of this setting was romance, heaps of it, along with ancient mystery, classical style and evocative luxury, with a set designed by Sumant Jayakrishnan. Everything here, down to the last detail, was about framing the collection in the best of Indian heritage and culture.

rohit11oct134

The show attracted a throng of guests, with the famed French shoe designer Christian Louboutin gracing the front row. It has to be said that Rohit Bal is one of few Indian designers to attract attention from his design contemporaries around the globe.

rohit4oct13

Bal’s collection is titled “Gulbagh” and the inspiration was Mughal opulence, not the city dwelling Mughal’s we usually think of though, the great warriors and statesman, but the Mughal’s at leisure, in their pleasure palaces, nestled in the valleys of Kashmir.

rohit10oct13

As per usual Bal’s design techniques mixed the age old with the contemporary, incorporating vegetable dyes and gold leaf for embellishments, and a range of fabrics like chanderi, fine mulmul, matka silk and velvet.

rohit8oct13

The collection was very distinctive in the fact that Bal incorporated a wealth of flora and fauna into his patterns, from roses and other delicate flowers, to tree leaves. The effect was truly mesmerising, as all the embellishments were brought forth in mesmerising colours such as reds, purples, cream, greens and blues.

rohit6oct13

With petite female models in prettily adorned lehengas with peplum blouses, embroidered jackets and saris, and princely male models (one of which was the king of machismo Arjun Rampal) doned in handsome achkans and churidars, the collection was a triumph.

rohit7oct13

Without hesitation, Rohit Bal deserved his rapturous standing ovation.

Now, what is making us so excited is the recent launch of Anita’s flagship store at DLF Emporio, the sprawling 3000 sq ft. bastion of luxury. As you can see, her store is rich in Rajasthani flare, but with splashes of design modernity infused throughout. In our opinion, it’s the perfect environment for Anita’s many fans to get their design fix.

The launch attracted the great and the good from fashion and film, two which have long been interlinked, including Suneet Varma, Dia Mirza, Sangeeta Bijlani, Pernia Qureshi, Radhika Chanana, Sujata Assomull Sippy, Harmeet Bajaj et al. They were all personally greeted by Anita as they entered the store.

Community Highlight: Suneet Varma

Fashion’s Great Magician

964361_534993943209357_1919206625_o

Grandeur, it’s a word that conjures up many thoughts, in art you might think of the Baroque, the Neo-Classical etc, in architecture you might think of the Palace of Versailles, and in fashion you’re more than likely to think of Suneet Varma. Suneet, one of India’s leading women’s and bridal wear designers launched his career back in the late 1980’s, when the Indian fashion industry, as we know it today, was in its genesis. It was a time when designers were breaking free from the traditional structures and beginning to embrace new design methods.

Going back to grandeur, it’s Suneet who has spearheaded an aesthetic that is forever structured around the grand, something that is fantastical and dreamlike, pristine fabrics that delicately layer over one another and elaborate embroidery that finely compliments every facet of a design, it’s pure theatre. Suneet’s inspiration is typically diverse, from art, books and film, to design, photography and nature, his creativity is continually spurred on by the world around him, and like a magician Suneet takes these varied inspirations and conjures together designs that encapsulate beauty in all its artistic forms.

Suneet Varma (3)

It’s hard and indeed impossible to place Suneet Varma in any specific box. He creates fashions that are as if lifted from a fairytale, designs that celebrate tradition and modernity in equal amounts. A specific factor that cements Suneet as a designer of merit is his understanding of the female form, and femininity as a whole, each one of his collections has embraced femininity, from the shaping and stitching to style and execution. So many designers try to incorporate grandeur into their creations, yet often fall flat, diluting beauty in favour of ephemeral attention, but Suneet has always mastered the alchemy of grandeur, showing us that to be grand doesn’t always mean turning fashion into an exaggerated circus.

The Making of a Master

Suneet Varma (1)

Suneet Varma (7)

25 years ago, fresh from the London School of Fashion and an internship at Yves Saint Laurent, Suneet began climbing the ladder as a designer, but would quickly be recognised as one of the great artisans of Indian fashion, an artist who was confident in his abilities but astute and humble enough to continue learning from others.

Suneet’s interview with Headlines Today

Year after year, each collection has superseded the last; the fashion establishment along with the public have become ever more entranced by his creations. For Suneet the goal was, and still remains, to highlight the sumptuous, the ethereal and essentially to make fashion tell a story.

Suneet Varma (10)

Always keen to collaborate, Suneet has been courted by a wealth of luxury brands from across the world, such as Armani Junior, Donna Karan, luxury hotel Dusit Devarana et al. In 2011, Suneet’s collaboration with designer Juith Lieber, famed for her luxury clutches and minaudieres, marked a greater exploration into accessory design, creating an autumn collection that fused together his playful and poetical creative approach, with Lieber’s sophisticated and synergistic approach, the outcome was a bejewelled extravaganza that celebrated nature and traditional Indian patterns. A spokeswoman for Judith Lieber said of the collaboration “Suneet Varma was our first and only choice as a design partner; he is the perfect designer for our creative aesthetic.”

Suneet Varma and Judieth Lieber

suneet varma and judith lieber

More recently, the luxury motor giant BMW approached Suneet to collaborate, which included designing interiors for their 7 series, unveiled in the spring of 2013. The “Auto-Couture” launch was held at the Dusit Devarana hotel, and featured fashions inspired by motorcar culture, from the 1930’s to the present day.

In 2013 his career was celebrated in a photographic retrospective, simply titled Suneet Varma, published by Niyogi Books. It was a humbling moment for a designer that has changed the face of Indian fashion, catapulting it onto the global stage. A man who has always wished to tell stories through fashion, with influences that cross Asia and Europe, Suneet Varma’s own story as a designer is the most fascinating of all.

Suneet Varma at Nobu London

This week on May 8th and 9th, at London’s prestigious Nobu restaurant, Suneet, along with Judith Leiber and Dubai based jewellery designer Kajal Assomull, will be showcasing his latest collection, which includes some of his collaborations with Judith Leiber. It will be a luxurious affair that brings together three designers who are never shy of celebrating the beautiful aesthetic.
