BMW India Bridal Fashion Week 2015: Suneet Varma

Suneet Varma

The finale of BMW India Bridal Fashion Week was rightly given to the amazing designer Suneet Varma. Based on the grandeur of the Ottoman Empire and the arts and literature of Persia, this collection features an array of both vibrant and pastel coloured lehengas in hues of pink, red, gold, and blue with heavy, intricate embroidery. Impeccably styled, the outfits feature feathered accessories and opulent headpieces handmade with beaten metal in antique shades of gold.

With head-turning collections, only Varma can truly describe his work and inspiration, “My world is about creating a dream- it is a chaotic place that I live in day in day out as I work on the collection. From the inspiration, to the sets, accessories and the music of the show- it builds up like an enormous surge and I treat it like a vast ocean of endless possibilities. And in the midst of all this chaos is the woman who is the true source of my inspiration and the collection is always her story.”

BMW India Bridal Fashion Week 2015: Tarun Tahiliani

Tarun Tahiliani

Aptly named ‘Our New Eclectic World’, the collection presented by Tarun Tahiliani at BMW India Bridal Fashion Week includes feminine silhouettes created through light-weight fabric layered gowns, lehengas and sarees. This collection brings a Western touch to Tahiliani’s designs, giving them a modern and elegant affect.

Tarun Tahiliani

Combining ancient Indian artistry with the latest fashion trends and techniques, Tahiliani describes the collection as ‘A visceral blend of classic draping, poetic construction, opulent textiles and intricate embellishments. There is a need for an intelligent and seamless fusion of our past and present.’ And how right he is! The designs in this collection are collectibles and can be worn now and in years to come.

It’s well known that Sabyasachi is the Emperor of divine and exuberant fashion, a studious artisan who carefully seeks out inspiration from rural arts and crafts to the art historical, creating some of the most evocative and inspiring designs. Sabyasachi was chosen to kick-start Amazon India Couture Week, and he did beautifully, showcasing a collection that celebrated distinct embroideries from differing parts of India, fashion with modern cuts and fine detailing.

For AICW, Sabyasachi collaborated with the God of French shoe design Christian Louboutin, who added a gorgeous injection of Parisian panache, with a eye-catching mix of refined European classicism. The collection, which saw the marriage of two of the worlds brightest designers is Bater – one of the most common hunting birds of India and depicted dark, gothic look in the form of colours and cuts.

The set for the show resembled a rundown house, with a rustic and dilapidated feel, befitting the Gothic theme of the collection with its muted colours of gold, inky blues and black, the real injection of colour came from Christian Louboutin’s blood red shoes. Sabyasachi and Christian Louboutin were the ideal team to launch this celebration of all things couture.

Bollywood Extravaganza: The Marriage of Riddhi Malhotra and Tejas Talwalkar

Top: The Bride and Groom Bottom: The Bride and Groom with uncle Manish and brother Punit.

It was a fantastically fashionable wedding for the niece of famed designer (and Bollywood favourite) Manish Malhotra. Riddhi Malhotra tied-the-knot with her fiance Tejas Talwalker, in Mumbai. Attracting a wealth of Bollywood’s great and good, like moths to a flame.

mh5 mh4 mh3 Top: Priyanka Chopra Middle: Madhuri Dixit with her husband Sriram Nene Bottom: Sridevi and Boney Kapoor

Obviously the guests were, on the most part, decked out in the finest designs Riddhi’s talented uncle had to offer. It was much like one of Malhotra’s fashion shows.

The star studded wedding began with the sangeet, where we saw a veritable who’s-who of the industry show up in support of Manish. The guest list included – Karisma and Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra, Karan Johar with mum Hiroo, Malaika and Amrita Arora, Kajol, Gauri Khan, Farah Khan, Urmila Matondkar, Sanjay Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Arjun Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra and more.

The Bollywood divas were the ultimate stars of the show, not however outshining the loved-up bride and groom. The beauty of it, was that everyone invited really did their best in the fashion stakes. It was of course a series of events, the sangeet, wedding ceremony, reception, that was dominated by the mighty Malhotra, but we saw some other designers on show including Manish Arora and Sanjay Garg.

We at Think Shaadi are hoping to see a lot more fashion filled wedding events in 2015! Xx

The Vogue Wedding Show 2014

With the Vogue Wedding Show just over a week away, taking place at  Taj Palace, New Delhi. We thought we’d cast our luxury loving eyes over some of the designers, handpicked by the Vogue team, to take part this year. As we have mentioned before, this year sees a wealth of talent, known for their creative zeal and meticulous attention to detail, ranging from couture to jewellery.

So, what makes the designers this year so special? Well let’s take a look at a handful of them. Firstly, there’s a common connection that binds all of them, whether it be the fashion designers or the jewellery designers. They each and every one possesses a pioneer spirit, a spirit which is deeply rooted in an age old sense of creativity.

Sabyasachi is the quintessential Indian designer; his inspirations are drawn from the rich and colourful history of Indian textiles, art, architecture and literature. His creations are always bathed in an historical flare, all encompassing patterns that dance across the fabric, yet forever with a lyrical sense of symmetry.

Manish Malhotra’s infectious joie de vivre for both women’s and menswear has always made him standout from the crowd, there’s no mistaking a Manish Malhotra design, the cuts, shapes, styles and embroidery are easy to spot, and of course easy to fall in love with. His bridal collections alone never fail to create a new feeling of wonder and awe with every season that goes by, typifying Bollywood decadence.

tarune

Well, what to say about Tarun Tahiliani. He is the man who encapsulates the Delhi glitterati, a playful and eternally curious creative sensibility. Tarun is a designer who continually shifts and morphs his style, melding together the traditional to the contemporary seamlessly.

GG (47)

Gaurav Gupta is a man who takes the words sexy and sultry to an entirely new level. Much like Manish, Gaurav has been a star of the Indian fashion industry since he first emerged into the spotlight, a tour de force, taking his female muse and turns them into princesses.

JJ Valaya brings power, unfettered power we should say, to his designs. It’s all about larger-than-life glamour, statement pieces which meld luxury and effortless grace together, in a magnificent bejewelled cocktail.

Shantanu & Nikhil’s design approach has attitude, flare and an unmistakeable panache, which is impossible to ignore. With creations that proudly mix together Indian culture with Western mores, It’s no surprise that they are the favourites, not just in South Asia, but across the world.

If you want feminine charm, look no further than Anita Dongre, her unmistakeable technique of balancing the beauty of the old, with the functionality of the new, is something so many designers find impossible to do. Anita is fast becoming the queen in her field, and it’s easy to see why.

Moving on to the jewellery designers, this year sees a number of big names, for example, Begani Jewels make for the perfect wedding accessories, with a finely tuned approach to design, Begani’s foundation is simplicity, and their pieces can go two ways, sticking with the simple, maximising minimalist beauty, to embracing the ornate and ostentatious.

Amrapali has created a language all of their own, a simplistic yet creatively virulent process, which merges ethnic styling with contemporary zeal, that crossed the cultural divides.

Vacheron Constantin is renowned the world over for producing aesthetically pleasing and vibrant time pieces, they have an age old technique which draws upon the exquisite and the divine. They are the masters of luxury.

Nirav Modi is all about classical design, with an emphasis on the sensual and delicate. His inspiration moves from culture to culture, whether it is Medieval Dutch art or French turn of the century Art Nouveau. Nirav is all about conjuring up the beauty of the world in jewellery form.

Decadence is the word du jour when it comes to Rose, founded by Biren Vaidya, when you look at his designs, images of age old glamour and distinction come to mind. Biren’s aesthetic is all about embracing the colour, the beauty of life.

Screen Shot 2014-07-25 at 09.31.03

It’s not just fashion and jewellery designers who will feature in the show, there’s also graphic designers such as Vivek Sahni, who has singlehandedly transformed the business of wedding invitations into an art form all of its own. Vivek’s designs are intricately made, miniature masterpieces that capture the personal feelings of love and excitement.

Screen Shot 2014-07-25 at 09.30.18

Then there is Vandana Mohan of The Wedding Design Company, Vandana goes way beyond the ordinary, staging weddings which are like fantastical dreams come to life. Her raison d’être is events, and over the years she has worked on some of the most inspiring and luxurious weddings in the world.

So, these are just some of the many designers and artisans at this year’s Vogue Wedding Show. It will be one of the most hottest and luxurious shows in the fashion calendar.
